Benson High School scholarship winners

The Benson High School Senior Awards Night was held Monday, May 17, 2004. It gave deserving attention to many members of the senior and junior class. The ceremony in many ways, is the high point of the academic year.
"This community is so generous. The businesses and civic organizations work hard all year long to provide post secondary opportunities for these very deserving students," said Benson High School Counselor Mindy Sherman, while welcoming the gathering of students, parents, scholarship providers and friends.
The Pledge of Alliance was lead by Eamonn O'Callaghan, 2004/05 National Honor Society President. Jeanie Mangold, of Cochise College, presented tuition waiver study grants to Jennifer Steven, Jennifer Murzyn and Jeremy Fenn with a potential value of $6.000. Col. David Dyche, of the University of Arizona Air Force ROTC detachment, presented a generous and prestigious full ROTC scholarship package to Katherine Barrera.
The University of Arizona also awarded tuition and cash scholarships with a potential value of $121,500 to Michaeline Jensen, Caylin Stroupe, Matthew Cagle, Isla Soto and Jocelynn Justen. Jensen was also the recipient of the U of A John P. Schaefer, a $4,000 cash award given to 25 exceptional Arizona graduates.
Arizona State University awarded junior Eamonn O'Callaghan the Medallion of Merit, valued at $1,000. Graduates earning ASU tuition and cash scholarships valued at $106,500 were offered to Katherine Barrera, Jocelynn Justen, Alicia Nowinsky, Corilynn Simmons, Matthew Ramirez, Caylin Stroupe and Rita-Maurine Schmidt. Schmidt also received a $500 ASU State Spiritleader award. $110,000 in potential value was offered by Northern Arizona University to Katherine Barrera, Matthew Cagle, Jocelynn Justen, Alicia Nowinsky, Linda Richards and Benito Ballesteros. Jacob Cherry and Joseph Zamudio received livestock judging scholarships valued at approximately $45,000 each to Connors College in Warner, Okla. Doane College in Nebraska afforded a tuition waiver to Heather McCullough. Sidney Colglazier will be playing football on scholarship for Eastern Arizona College. Ryan Trujillo will play baseball on a full ride scholarship to Pima Community and Jared Saunders will participate on scholarship for the Paradise Valley College track & field team. Sheena Mahmoud was awarded a $500 music scholarship to Central Arizona College.
Local, regional and state scholarships are: The Alma Foundation, in memory of Emilio Aguirre Jr., gave $500 to Tyne Ashby and Dennis Kerg. Apache Nitrogen gave $1,000 each to Jeanetta Garmon, Jennifer Stevens and Alicia Nowinsky. The Benson Faculty gave $500 to DA Kerg, the Benson Education Association awarded $250 to Casey Harris, Benson Friends of the Library gave $1,000 to Isla Soto, Benson Junior Women's Club presented Sheena Mahmoud with $500 and the Benson Lions Club gave $250 to Casey Harris. The Benson Merchants Association gave $1,000 each to Alicia Nowinsky and Rita Schmidt, Benson Rotary gave $500 each to Nickolas Becker, Sheena Mahmoud and Kyleigh Staples. The Benson Business & Professioianl Women's association gave $500 to Jennifer Murzyn, Benson Woman's Club gave $500 to Alicia Nowinsky, Catherine Stephens Memorial $2,000 went to Corilynn Simmons, Cochise County Sheriff's Department awarded $500 each to Katie Barrera and Isla Soto and Lisa Nelson won a $500 Cowboy Poet contest. The Community Foundation awarded the Ralph and Mary Darling scholarship of $1,500 each to Matthew Ramirez and Alicia Nowinsky, Elks Club gave $1.000 to DA Kerg, Gloria Flores Hispanic Businesswomen's $500 to Katie Barrera and the Jerry Eismon Memorial gave $500 each to Mikey Jensen and DA Kerg. The Benson Mexican Festival Committee awarded $1,500 to Martha Lopez, the Jaime Herrera Memorial $250 to Matt Ramirez and the Alex Reyes Memorial to $250 to Katie Barrera.
Sierra Southwest Arizona G & T Cooperative and The Small Contributions Fund presented DA Kerg, Alicia Nowinsky and Tyne Ashby with $600 each.
Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative Foundation gave $1,000 each to Matthew Cagle and Caylin Stroupe. Stroupe also received a Military Children's Scholar award, made possible by the Dial Corporation, of $1,500. Mikey Jensen won the Robert C. Bryd Honors Scholarship in the amount of $1,500, renewable for three additional years. The National FFA Organization presented the $1,500 Monsanto Company/National Association of Farm Broadcasters-Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship to Joe Zamudio.
Recognized at the ceremony were Arizona Daily Star Senior Achievers William Brooks, Matthew Cagle, Michaeline Jensen, Dennis Kerg, Joshua Mecham, Caylin Stroupe and Katherine Barrera. Josh Mecham was recognized as a High School Christain Athlete All-American nominee and Katherine Barrera as a winner. Mikey Jensen received the Principal's Leadership Award and a National Merit Scholar Commended Student. Eamonn O'Callaghan will represent Benson High School this summer at the Boy State conference, while Caleb Blashke is the alternate. Heather Young will attend the Girls State conference and Clarice Fenn is the alternate. The Hugh O'Brien (HOBY) this summer at the Boy State conference, while Caleb Blashke is the alternate. Heather Young will attend the Girls State conference and Clarice Fenn is the alternate. The Hugh O'Brien (HOBY) Youth Leadership attendee will be Meghan Fenn and the alternate is Elsa O'Callaghan. The Rotary Club Summer Leadership attendee will be Elsa O'Callaghan and the alternate is Sarah Cagle.
In closing the ceremony, Mindy Sherman again thanked the community for their generousity and acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the award winners. The potential value for all scholarships exceeded $300,000.
