Authorities are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the body of a white male found by a Texas couple near mile post 7.8 on Mescal Road last Wednesday.

Lynda and Larry Clark, visiting their daughter in Mescal, were camping in the area known as Happy Valley celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary. While looking for firewood around midnight, Larry came across the gruesome discovery near the Cochise-Pima County line, he said.

"My dog kept going over the hill and I kept calling him. He kept going back so I figured he found something," Larry said. "When I went over there, I looked down and I just yelled at my wife to stay away because it was a body. I couldn't believe it. You don't expect to find something like that. We were just out there camping."

The Cochise County Sheriff's Department estimated the man was about 35 to 45 years old with blondish brown hair, brown eyes, a mustache and partial beard.

Sheriff Larry Dever said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the scene, which means there was no apparent cause of death. The department is now waiting for autopsy and toxicology reports to determine cause of death, Dever said.

However, even though there were no signs of trauma, Dever said the incident "is absolutely suspicious."

"It is suspicious any time we find a body that appears to have been dumped," Dever said. "It was obviously left there purposely. It was not an illegal immigrant who died in the heat. We can't disclose a lot of the details right now because this is under investigation, but we are looking for the public's help. We are encouraging anyone with any kind of information to call."

Lynda Clark said the discovery is a "nightmare I will relive for many years. You see this kind of stuff on television, but you never think you will find something so horrible," she said. "It just really hit me hard."

Lynda was transported by ambulance to the Benson Hospital after suffering a panic attack following the discovery. She was treated and released early Thursday morning.

Dever said anyone who can assist in identifying the body should call the sheriff's office at 520-432-9500 or 1-800-362-0812.
