Turnout was grand for the Senior Meals Golf Tournament Saturday, but fund-raising continues as Catholic Community Services (CCS) seeks to raise funds to continue operating.
Thirty-five teams played in Saturday's inaugural tournament at Turquoise Hills Family Golf Center.
"This is a huge success. We have people here who are not golfers but came for the cause. In fact, for most, the (golf) tournament part was a secondary thing," said Leisa Cotten, senior nutrition director at CCS.
"My heart is overflowing with appreciation, that's for sure," she said.
Derived funds benefit the program which delivers meals throughout the county for the home-bound elderly.
CCS needs to raise $15,000 by the end of the month to continue delivering meals.
Total amounts for the golf tournament were not yet available as donations continue, said Cotten.
CCS delivers 180,000 meals annually in Benson, Willcox, Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Douglas and Tombstone.
"Our homebound people are very appreciative of the support and caring the communities in the county are showing," said Cotten, noting that many meal-program recipients pooled donations toward the cause.
"Our goal for this year is $30,000, and we're still accepting donations," said Cotten. "We've set another goal of $30,000 to $35,000 for the next fiscal year, and said a second golf tournament would be held.
"It seems to be a great source of fun," said Cotten, as competing teams appeared to enjoy the morning and rounds of golf.
Cotten said donations continue coming in but it appears as though this year's goal has been reached, ensuring the current level of service for at least another year.
Rite Manufacturing of Benson was the morning group's winning team, which consisted of Joe Butler, Craig Taylor, Darryl Friedman and Allen Rebun. Second place went to Fireside Lounge of Huachuca City. That team was comprised of Mike Higgs, Scott McLaughlin, Shawn O'Rourke and Jergen Stark. Third place went to Kenny Fischer, Everett Dillon, Bill Whaley and Chris Westfall. Judy Burns and John Carter won closest to the pin.
Car Quest of Willcox won the afternoon round, with Tony Franz, Jill Williams, Carl Hestand and Otis Harris comprising the team. Stan's Fence of Huachuca City was second, with Scott Grindy, Ralph Kale, Joe Massey and Jodi Saski making up that team. Third place winners were David Bingham, Jim Tidwell, Kyle Merrill and Brandon Merrill.
Closest to the pin winners werr Jodi Saski and Scott Grindy.
