The city is now in the market for a new community development director after Kim Dimmett resigned last week.
Dimmett, who had been with the city for just over a year, refused to comment on her reason for leaving, or where she is going from here.
The city provided the following resignation letter submitted by Dimmett on Jan. 13:
"Please accept my resignation as Benson's Community Developer Director. My last day will be Feb. 3. It has been my pleasure serving the residents of Benson.
"I will coordinate with staff and administration on my pending projects so as to minimize transitional problems.
"Thank you for your past support of the community development department. Staff in the department have been exceptional to work with and will be greatly missed."
City Manager Boyd Kraemer said the resignation did come as a surprise to city officials. Dimmett is not the first department head to resign in recent months, City Clerk/Finance Director Karen Johnson resigned in October.
"I just think people are mobile and are always looking for places that better meet their needs," Kraemer said. "Karen wanted to go be near family and Kim is just an up and coming professional. It is hard for us being in a small town where salaries aren't as competitive. I would say we are challenged now when it comes to manpower. We have had resignations in the water department and with the police department. It's just something we have to work through."
Dimmett's position, which pays $57,000, has already been posted on national job Web sites, Kraemer said. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 20. After that, Kraemer said they hope to fill the position within 60 days.
To replace Johnson as financial director, the city has accepted 18 applications and will likely have the position filled in the next 45 to 60 days.
The winning applicant's annual salary will be between $54,657 and $81,895 depending on experience, Kraemer said.
Vicki Vivian, who was the former deputy clerk, took Johnson's spot as the city clerk. Vivian's annual salary is $40,643.
The city has also received 11 applications for a second building official. Expecting the position to be filled in the next 60 days, the new employee will receive an annual salary between $28,762 and $47,622 depending on experience.
