A Benson High School junior was arrested last week after school officials found a loaded handgun in the student's locker.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Woodall said school officials acted on a campus rumor that turned out to be true.
"The student was said to have a gun in his athletic locker, and I, along with the campus police officer, checked into the rumor, which turned out to be true," he said. "The student was then taken into custody immediately." His name is being withheld because of his age.
Woodall said while it is troubling for the school's administration to find out there is any weapon on campus, in this case there was no evidence the student planned to use it.
"He said he brought it to school so he could take it and give it to someone else later," Woodall said. "This is just the last thing in the world we want, but I am pleased with how quickly the officer and administration handled the incident."
Benson Police Chief Glenn Nichols said the 17-year-old has been charged with a misdemeanor for possessing the gun - a .25 caliber - on school campus.
Nichols said the student was released, and charges are still pending. However, being charged as a juvenile, the student doesn't face any major punishment, he said.
