A Benson man died last week following a head-on collision in eastern Arizona that also killed a young Safford man.

Patrick W. Haverty, 20, died at the scene of the Sept. 18 fiery crash on Route 191 six miles south of Clifton, said DPS spokesman James Oien. Eric Campos, 19, died the following day at a Phoenix hospital, according to a DPS news release.

Haverty, northbound in a 1999 Chevrolet sedan, lost control of the car, overcorrecting when the vehicle went off the roadway to the right after having passed another car, said Oien. The sedan then went off the pavement a second time and proceeded into the southbound lane and into the oncoming path of the 2001 Buick sedan driven by Campos.

Haverty was ejected from the car following the impact and both cars caught fire.

"The Chevrolet broke apart from the impact," Oien said.

Authorities said Campos sustained third-degree burns over most of his body, adding it was unknown if seat belts were in use. "Investigators believe that excessive speed may have contributed to the collision," the release states.
