Benson High School senior James Howe made it official last week, signing the papers to play soccer at Arizona Western Community College in Yuma.
The commitment to play for the two-year college comes with a full-ride scholarship worth about $14,000.
Before settling on Arizona Western, Howe had been looking at colleges from California through New Mexico.
Howe, passionate about soccer, said he wanted a school where he could play and get an education.
Howe, 18, said he's excited for the opportunity, and chose Arizona Western because he has known Soccer Coach Kenny Dale for years, and likes the program.
"I am really excited about this. I am getting my college paid for and at the same time I get to keep playing the sport I love," he said.
Howe's presence will be missed next year, however, as the 2006 state champions will be looking to repeat without their leading scorer.
Throughout his high school career, Howe has scored 140 goals, with 42 of those coming this past season when the Bobcats finished 20-3-3.
Besides putting the ball in the goal on a regular basis, Howe has been responsible for the Benson soccer program, which was first established in 1994.
In 2004, Howe became the first-ever Bobcat to be chosen on the 2A All-State second team.
Since his sophomore year, Howe has received numerous region and state honors, including being named the 2006 South Region Player of the Year.
While excited to play at the college level, Howe said he's going to miss his teammates, but added he feels they have the talent and ability to repeat next season.
Besides being the 2006 state champions, the Bobcats also overcame several obstacles this season in becoming the 2A South Region Champions.
As Howe has pointed out, one of the season's highlights was beating Desert Christian for the first time ever.
