Missing the 2006 postseason by one run, Benson Bobcats' baseball Coach Steve Rennie expects the upcoming season to be just as competitive.

The Bobcats were 10-9-1 overall and 5-5 in conference play. They missed the postseason after losing to Willcox, and conference opponent Bisbee upset Thatcher in the same day.

This year, Rennie said he expects Benson to be a contender with an abundance of returning players, and a deep order of pitchers and infielders.

Team leaders include returning seniors Tyler Moore and James Howe. Both will be taking their turns on the pitcher's mound throughout the season. Moore also plays first base, and Howe, when he's not pitching, can be seen on second base.

Rennie said he's confident in his other seniors this season, all of which he said will likely start. Those seniors include infielders Burt Cardenas and Spencer Carter and outfielder Sam Crawford.

Rennie said there is also a strong group of juniors hitting the field this year. Leading the pack is Matt Howe, who will be the team's catcher for the second season in a row.

Rennie said with the regular season set to start this week, he has also been pleased with the preseason play of brothers Cory and Kyle Graf. He said the freshman and sophomore duo will likely start with Cory playing third base and short stop and Kyle can serve the team where needed as short stop, second baseman or an outfielder.

Rennie said this season the team's strength is definitely going to be speed.

"We will play a lot of more hit and run and stealing," he said. "We are going to use our speed to pressure opposing defenses."

As for the team's weakness, Rennie said they have strong batters at the top of the order, but he is a little worried about the bottom

The Bobcats' season got under way on Tuesday in the first round of the Safford Tournament, which will be played until March 3. With several 2A East Conference opponents in the tournament, Rennie said it will give the team a look at the competition.
