Continuing a nearly 30-year tradition, the St. David Tigers hosted the Rusty Merrill Tournament this weekend.
The host Tigers took second in the tournament, losing 27-7 to Duncan in the championship game.
Getting to the final game, the Tigers defeated Patagonia 7-2 and Clifton 12-11.
Making the all-tournament team for the Tigers were David Kartchner, Jordan Jacquez and Chris Reece.
Coach Jim Crawford said the tournament is special to St. David because it celebrates Rusty Merrill, a former custodian at the school district.
"This tournament use to be the East Tournament, but at one point Rusty's family asked to change the name and they would donate the money," he said. "We of course had no problem doing that because I remember Rusty worked at the school alone for ages. He was a janitor and the only maintenance guy we had on staff for a long time."
Crawford couldn't recall all the dates, but said he knows Merrill was still working at the school at least as far back as 1959.
In honor of Merrill, Crawford said they always host the four-team tournament.
Patagonia took third place and Clifton came in last.
This week the Tigers will compete against Tanque Verde on Tuesday, and will continue tournament competition in the Bisbee Baseball Tournament this weekend.
The Tigers will host their next home game against Patagonia in 1A South Conference action on Tuesday. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
