The Benson Bobcats' softball team came out swinging last Tuesday as they extended their 23-game winning streak in the 2A East Conference.

A Brooke Tibbitts triple at the top of the first inning gave the Bobcats a quick 2-0 lead, and they just kept rolling from there.

Freshman Shalena Solis, who took over in the outfield this season, showed off her hitting skills with four RBIs, a double and a home run.

In the first, Solis shot a grounder into left center, getting two runners home before being called out on third base.

With a 4-0 lead at the top of the second inning, the Bobcats continued to show off its power hitters.

Pitcher Megan Ellsworth hit her second home run of the season to extend the lead to 5-0.

At bat, Ellsworth was 3-3 with one run, three RBIs, a double and a home run.

Coach Shad Housley said the Bobcats performed well despite having several sick players. Ellsworth, catcher Brittney Batten and shortstop Tibbitts were battling through illness during the game, he said.

In pitching, Ellsworth remains undefeated at 6-0, after leading the Bobcats to first place in the San Manuel Tournament two weeks ago.

Against Tombstone, Ellsworth pitched a one-hitter, with one strikeout.

Getting the Tombstone offense off the field quickly, the Bobcats got back into a groove at the top of the third, scoring five more runs, on a Batten double, a Tibbitts single and a home run from Solis.

After five innings the game was called due to the Arizona Interscholastic Association 10-run mercy rule, giving the Bobcats an 11-0 victory.

"This was the perfect way to start out the season at home and on the new field," Housley said. "On the new field the middle school won their first game on this field, the junior varsity won their first and now the varsity won. That is a great start."

Until this season the Bobcats had to compete on the softball field at Lions Park. The Benson Schools Governing Board approved spending $45,000 for the new field last year.

In the first conference game of the season, Housley said the Bobcats did hit the ball well.

"They are seeing the ball the way they should be," he said. "There are some things we need to address during the break."

The Bobcats, now 7-0 on the season, will have a 16-day break until their next competition against Seton Catholic on Thursday, March 22.
