In qualifying for the 2A State Championships at the Douglas Invitational on Saturday, senior Kori Westfall was also named the outstanding female in the field events.
Westfall took first place in shot put and discus in the second meet of the season.
In shot put, Westfall threw 35 feet, 10 inches, and in discus she managed a distance of 126-2.
Throwing Coach Mike Saunders said Westfall has definitely stepped up her game.
"It was the second meet of the season and she really performed well," he said. "We are really pleased with where she is. Kori is a top contender at the 2A level and as she continues to work out and get stronger to be competitive at even higher levels."
As the only senior on the throwing team, Saunders said besides working to improve her own game, Westfall helps coach the younger athletes and get everything ready for upcoming competition.
"She has really stepped up this season and as a coach I really appreciate her being out there," Saunders said.
Besides Westfall, the Benson girls continue to improve. Just as Head Coach Linda Lamb predicted, eight Bobcats turned in times that now qualify them to compete in the 2A State Championships in April.
Leading the Lady Bobcats in running was again Sylvia Gomez.
In her qualifying runs, Gomez took first place in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes.
In the 100-meter dash, Gomez turned in a time of 13.44 seconds, and she finished the 400-meter in one minute, 22 seconds.
Leading the 1,600-meter relay team, Gomez and her teammates took fifth place, which qualified them for state.
The returning 2006 state champion team consists of Gomez, Dani Higgins, Cheyanne Keith and Megan Richards.
Higgins, a senior, also qualified, taking first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.01.
Higgins along with teammates on the 3,200-meter relay team also qualified, taking fifth place.
Besides Higgins, Nina Johnson, Amanada Andrade and Katie Clark also run the relay.
In the 15-team invitational, the girls' team took fifth place with 53 points. Rincon came in first with 111 points, Sahuaro took second with 66 points, Buena took third with 64 and Marana Mountain View came in fourth with 60.
Lamb said it was an excellent showing for Lady Bobcats, in a competition that featured 4A and 5A schools.
By the time the 2A South Regionals come around in April, Lamb said she expects most of the Bobcats' runners, jumpers and throwers to qualify for state.
Lamb did not provide stats for the boys team.
This weekend the Bobcats will be competing in the Willie Wiliams Classic at the University of Arizona.
Following the meet the Bobcats will have a week off, and will return to competition on Friday, March 31 in the Bisbee Invitational.
