Benson's Joe Ryan continues to lead the Bobcats, as the golf team competed in two more meets last week.
Last Tuesday the Bobcats hosted Thatcher and Ajo in a three-way meet at the San Pedro Golf Course.
Ryan finished nine holes in 38 strokes to take first place, one stroke ahead of a Thatcher golfer that finished with a 39.
However, Thatcher won the meet with 212 points. Benson's top six golfers finished with a combined 225 strokes and Ajo had 322.
Marcus Fenn finished the meet in 44 strokes, while Caleb Shull finished in 45, Dustin Teague shot a 48, Ryan Merrill had 50 and Brady Fenn finished in 51 strokes.
After the meet, Coach Fred Comaduran said the meet was yet another indication that Thatcher is the team to beat this season. In order to compete with the class of the 2A East Conference, Benson golfers are going to have to get more consistent, he said.
On Saturday, the Bobcats would get another look at the conference competition in the 17-team Thatcher Invitational.
Comaduran said he's pleased with the Bobcats for finishing in the top 10, taking eighth place with 367 points. The Bobcats finished behind Show Low, which came in first with 336, Payson with 350, Thatcher with 354, Showflake with 357, St. Gregory with 358, Blue Ridge with 362 and Safford, which finished the course in 366 strokes.
Ryan led the Bobcats shooting an 87, finishing 11th overall, followed by Marcus Fenn who shot an 89, for a 13th place finish.
"This was excellent competition," Comaduran said. "This should inspire the Benson team to practice with a purpose. We are not that far from Thatcher at this point."
As the season pulls into full swing after spring break, Comaduran said he would like the golfers to be more consistent and continue to aim at defeating Thatcher.
