Mat Cats compete

The Benson Mat Cats had a good turnout March 16, at the first of two wrestling mini-tournaments that featured 56 boys and girls competing in grades kindergarten through fifth.

The Mat Cats hosted the tournament in Tucson, along with the Willcox Wrestling Club.

Jay Haro won the Group A for wrestlers in the 45-pound category. Clayton Sherman was second, and Marcus Richards was third. For the wrestlers in Group B, Benjamin Rush was the winner, with Cody Hoflich second, and Tanner DeBaun finishing third.

For wrestlers in the 50-pound category, Jason Fletcher was the winner of Group A. David Ens finished second, and Trey Meza came in third place. Adam Gamez topped the Group B competitors, while Ethan Coleman finished second, Denton Fenn third, and Ty Moncada came in fourth.

Ben Miller won the 145 -pound category.

Logan Moncada defeated all wrestlers in the 55-pound category. Caleb Placencia placed second, while Mitchell Townley was third, and Payden Fletcher finished fourth.

There were many competitors in the 60-pound group. Marielle DeBaun finished first in the girls' group, while Kaysen Maakestad came in second. In the boys Group A. Steven Thum held off all comers. Michael Roundy was second, Zach Wiegand third, and Emilio Barrios came in fourth place. In the boys Group B, Tyson Coleman was the winner. Zach Smith finished second, Landon DeBaun third, and Reiley Winker was fourth.

In the 70-pound group, Parker Osterman won it, while David Laney finished second. Ross Ens came in third place, and Dirk Dastrup finished in fourth place. In the 75-pound group, Zack Placencia finished first, and Keegan Graf came in second. Miles Choate finished third, while Daniel Laney came in fourth.

Among the 85-pound group, Kieran Meekestad finished first. Josh Nolan came in second, Perrin Maakestad third, and D.J. King came in fourth.

Among the 90-pounders, Bradley Maxwell beat all comers. Caden Taylor was the runnerup, while Zach Richards took third place, and Brian Gamez finished fourth. Nathan McGoffin won in the 100-pound category, beating out runner-up Dillon Dastrup. Alex Candaleria finished third.

The Benson Mat Cats have one more mini-tournament left this spring. They will also be competing in Freestyle and Folkstyle tournaments sponsored by Arizona/USA Wrestling throughout southern Arizona.
