A St. David family arrived home Saturday to find their house and all their belongings had been lost in a fire.
St. David Volunteer Fire Department Chief Loyal Gephart said the American Red Cross in Sierra Vista is working to help out the family.
Gephart said the family was away on a fishing trip when the blaze gutted their home.
The fire at 40 E. Golden Bell Road occurred sometime between 12:30 and 1:15 a.m., said Gephart.
"It started downstairs toward the front of the house," he said.
Firefighters arrived to find the two-story brick home fully engulfed. Gephart said it's unclear exactly how the fire started but did say that it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
A neighbor reported the fire, said Gephart.
Despite the darkness, a thick plume of smoke was ominously visible. Firefighters were unable to enter the structure and it remained unclear if anyone was in the home, Gephart said at the scene.
It was not until later that it became known there was nobody home.
Crews did manage to save the contents within a garage and a pickup truck on the property did not appear to be damaged. Sparks from the fire ignited a shed next door, but crews were able to extinguish that quickly.
Eight firefighters and two engines responded, while Benson Volunteer Fire Department assisted with an engine and five firefighters. St. David firefighters cleared the scene at 7:15 a.m.
Gephart said while there were strong numbers in support of that call, he remains concerned with daytime calls and would like to have more people on board.
"We get plenty of people at night," said Gephart. "In the daytime when people are at work is when we're hurting for people."
St. David Fire Department's plight is not unlike other volunteer departments.
Benson Fire Chief Keith Spangler has expressed that concern more than once.
Gephart said there are times in St. David when there may be only two people available should an emergency arise.
"We'd like to have anyone who is willing to help us out - especially in the day," said Gephart.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can attend an April 14 board meeting at the St. David Fire Station anytime from 8 a.m. to noon to complete necessary applications. They can also call Lt. Jeremy Coleman (training officer) at 720-4620.
