St. David High School will be putting on a musical play "New Harvest" Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. at the St. David Auditorium (or '38 building). The cost will be $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for kids 5 and younger.
"New Harvest" takes place in a town in which the local people have been farming their lands by hand for years, and have long-standing traditions they adhere to. Suddenly, an outsider, Avalon (played by Jeff Kartchner) comes to town with some machines. Avalon claims that these machines can help the people by doing their labors for them. This in turn will prolong their lives and improve their quality of life.
Feelings among the locals are divided, as the people are torn between the promise of a better life and maintaining the traditions which have defined their lives, and those of their ancestors.
Brynn (Elise Jones) endorses Avalon and his machines, and is certain the machines will be an improvement, but finally confides to her sister Savannah (Camille Jones) that her real reason for endorsing Avalon's ideas is because she loves him and wants to marry him.
Meanwhile, Savannah, whose main interest is in tending to a dying mother, eventually falls in love with Avalon, who loves her too. The machines are accepted, but not until it's agreed that the annual traditions of the town would continue to be recognized.
Kartchner, as Avalon, is the main character, and is excited about the play.
"It's something completely new," Kartchner said. "It's new music. You can't just find them on the internet. I like singing these songs."
As to the play, Kartchner explains that one of the premises is that for 400 years, nobody ever left the town.
There are 17 students in the cast, and there's a surprise twist near the end.
