After only their second meeting, the new Benson Arizona Rangers company has several applications.
Kevin Rasch, who will command the new company, said two dozen people attended the July 10 meeting, a similar turnout to their first one.
While the first meeting was more of an informal gathering in which Rasch tried to gauge and attract interest in the Rangers, the follow-up meeting had more formal goals for those with serious interest.
"We had an introductory training program that included basic stance and baton procedures," Rasch said. "This is intended to give those interested in the Rangers a feel for the type of training they will experience when becoming a new Ranger."
Arizona Rangers are required to participate in the Arizona Ranger Training Academy, or ARTA program which involves similar training to that used by law enforcement agencies. Rasch said that while Rangers are volunteers, they're expected to possess full duty abilities just like volunteer firemen.
Formalizing the Benson Rangers is a process that will require a certain amount of paperwork. It requires five active Rangers to file the paperwork with the state organization.
"We currently have a commitment from five Rangers to get the new company ratified within 60 days by the State Board of Governors of the Arizona Rangers," Rasch said. "Beyond that, we are working toward recruiting a couple dozen or more new recruits in the next several months to build the new company."
More than anything else, the Arizona Rangers are about community involvement, and Rasch said, adding the last meeting discussion included how to get younger people involved.
"Getting the Rangers involved with school activities and the promotion of the Ranger Cadet program is important to us," Rasch said. "Cadets are given training in ethics and handling stressful situations as part of preparing them to become leaders in the community."
"Also, future community events will provide an opportunity for Ranger demonstrations of early territory lifestyle that has been all but lost in our modern technology society."
The next Benson Company meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 14, at the Benson Police Department and Fire Station on 7th Street. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
