The Benson Professional Woman's Club (BPW) named Debbie Thompson their Woman of the Year at an award ceremony Monday, Sept 24.
Family, friends and others attended the ceremony, though Thompson admits she was not expecting to receive an award that evening.
"I was never so shocked in my life," Thompson said, thrilled at being recognized by her peers for her efforts as the executive director of the Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The club gives the award annually to a woman who is active in and contributes to the community. Rosemarie Detweiler, a BPW club member, said the decision to honor Thompson was an easy choice.
"She's done such a fantastic job in the past year," said Detweiler.
Thompson was born in Deming, N.M., and moved to Benson with her family when she was young. She attended Benson schools from kindergarten through her senior year of high school.
After graduating, Thompson worked as a hairdresser before becoming the activities director at the Twin Lakes RV Park. She worked there and at Blue Mesa Park in Gunnison, Colo., before deciding to stay in Benson for good.
After going back to school and selling real estate she decided to take the position at the Benson Chamber of Commerce.
Thompson has been the executive director for about a year.
"It was fun," Thompson said about receiving the award. "It was an honor and I was thrilled."
Thompson will also be honored with other Women of the Year at the state convention in Safford sometime next spring.
Thompson's father, Tommy Thompson, was Benson Citizen of the Year in 1965.
