Anne Hummel, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, will present a free diabetes course in Benson from February through March.

The course will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 9:30 a.m., at Community Presbyterian Church, 590 S. Huachuca St. The class will be a six-session, 12-hour course that will continue on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon through March 12. Various areas of diabetes management will be discussed in the course, including medication, dietary management, exercise, stress management, complications, foot care, health monitoring and new technology in the medical field.

Since she retired in 1995, Hummel said that she has been teaching the class for 11 years and was driven to teach about diabetes after finding out people didn't know as much as they should about the disease. After getting a grant to teach the course, she said she has been teaching courses in different communities across southeastern Arizona including Benson, Willcox, Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Douglas and Patagonia.

The diabetes class has had a high return rate over the years, with many people returning to take the course again, Hummel said. There have also been doctors who have recommended patients to come to take her course, she said.

"I am highly committed to helping people with this disease," Hummel said.

One of the best aspects of the class is that it's like a support group and serves as an opportunity to hear about other people's situations when dealing with diabetes, Hummel said.

"People like being with the group and hearing other people's situations," Hummel said.

Hummel said it is important for people to learn that diabetes is a big problem, not just in southeastern Arizona, but across the United States as well. There are about 21 million in the United States alone currently suffering from diabetes, with almost the same amount of people displaying symptoms of pre-diabetes, she said.

In order to prevent diabetes, people must understand the importance of eating right, losing weight and exercising, Hummel said, adding they have an optional walk before every class. There are even more children today getting Type-2 diabetes due to weight problems, she said.

In addition to being glad to be able to continue teaching others about diabetes, Hummel said she feels rewarded to impart her knowledge of the disease to help people better their lives.

"I've given them the knowledge and answers to make the lifestyle changes that would have saved their lives," Hummel said.
