The opening meet for the 2008 season brought eight first-place finishes on Friday for the Benson Bobcats. As a team, the Bobcats took fourth place with 88 points, finishing behind Bisbee, Tombstone and Thatcher.
The Bobcats are looking to improve on last year, where they returned several 2A state finishers, and the girls' team is looking to defend the 2A East Conference crown. As a team, the Bobcats took second place in the state championships.
The girls do, however, have some big shoes to fill, losing Dani Higgins and Kori Westfall last season.
Leading the pack is Sylvia Gomez, who took the 2007 state championship in the 400-meter dash and second place in the 100-meter.
On Friday, Gomez picked up where she left off last season, taking first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.11 seconds and in the 400, finishing in one minute, .01 second.
Senior Amanda Andrade also performed well Friday, taking first place in the mile with a time of 6:16, and in the shot put, heaving a distance of 32 feet, eight inches.
Other first-place finishers on Friday included Katri Elsmore, who leaped a distance of 32-4.5, Brittanie Ames took first in the 300-meter hurdles and Derrick Fenn took care of business in the 110-meter hurdles.
"I was extremely pleased with both the girls' and the boys' teams," said Coach Linda Lamb. "Even though we didn't have all our athletes competing, we did exceptionally well. Even our younger athletes, the freshmen and sophomores, look very good and will definitely be competitive in our conference and at state."
This week the Bobcats will be competing in the Douglas Invitational.
After Friday's meet, the Bobcats will be on a spring break holiday, before they pick up with tougher competition in the Bisbee Invitational on Saturday, March 29.
The Bobcats' final home meet of the season will be the annual Jerry Lee Invitational on Saturday, April 12.
