The St. David girls' softball players won their first two games of the season with a blowout against Tanque Verde and a solid effort at home against Academy of Tucson.

The runs were plentiful for St. David as they were all over Tanque Verde in their first game of the season. St. David blasted 22 runs and used an effective pitching game to dominate Tanque Verde and win 22-1.

St. David played their second game against Academy of Tucson where they had success at the plate and were able to score some runs early for a 4-1 lead after the first inning. Their lead was cut to 4-2 in the second.

The game became tight as Academy of Tucson scored twice in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. After Breana Carpenter ran for a score and a Miriam Williams' single drove another home, St. David regained control of the game with a 6-4 lead.

Academy of Tucson had a quick three outs in the fourth inning as St. David quickly was able to bat again. Rachael Larson hit a triple for St. David to drive in a score and ran home for another as their lead grew to 8-4.

With another score by Brianna Judd in the fifth inning, St. David had a 9-4 lead as they continued to hit well in the game. Academy of Tucson came alive in the sixth and scored two quick runs for a 9-6 tally.

After retiring Academy of Tucson's batters in the seventh inning, St. David's victory was secured as they won 9-6.

With two victories on the season, St. David softball Coach Ira Lewis said the team's priorities this year are to pitch well and play solid defense. The team is also aiming to get a high seed a for the state playoffs, he said.

Lewis said he has high hopes for the team's freshman players this season, who include Kayla Carpenter and Rachael Larson. They are young but skilled and will continue to get better every year, he said.

The team's strength this season should be its pitching, as Cyndal Mayberry is expected to do well and build on being the team's number one pitcher last season as a freshman, said Lewis. Kayla Carpenter will be the team's number two pitcher and also shows a lot of promise, he added.

Lewis said the team's depth will be its biggest weakness with only 10 players. Some players from last season didn't come out this year, he said.

Having no senior players this season, Lewis said the team will battle hard and not use youth as an excuse to not compete well.

"We are going to work hard this year to be successful and not write the year off to being young and inexperienced," Lewis said.
