Heavy hitters, strong pitching and a lot of talent led the Bobcats' softball team to four more victories last week, as they improve to 13-0 on the season.
Along with a perfect season to date, sophomore Shalena Solis is already blasting the ball, hitting another homerun on Saturday to tie the Benson Schools' career homerun record.
It may be early in the season, but the Bobcats are already making a case that they are still the best in the 2A East Conference and ready to defend their title against anyone. While focusing on the conference, the Lady Bobcats are also keeping their eye on the prize, and that's another state title.
Senior pitcher Megan Ellsworth said they won state two years ago when she was a sophomore, and this year she feels they have more talent than ever to go all the way, and probably next year after her tenure is over. Ellsworth is now 10-0 on the season.
Last week the Lady Bobcats had a busy week, starting out against the always tough, Bourgade Catholic.
The Bobcats were down early, losing 2-1 going into the second inning.
After the game Coach Shad Housley told the girls he was interested to see how they would respond when things got tough.
They showed him, starting in the second inning when leadoff batter Brooke Tibbitts was walked and catcher Brittney Batten brought her home on a two-out single, to tie the game at 2-2. Batten was 2-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Tibbitts had two runs with two stolen bases.
In the top of the fourth, heavy-hitter Shalena Solis hit a triple down the first-base line. Gabi Cardenas didn't leave her stranded, laying down a bunt for a successful base hit and an RBI to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Solis was 2-3 with a run, a double and a triple.
The Bobcats' defense held strong for the remainder of the game, with Ellsworth racking up 10 strikeouts and allowed fives hits, one walk and one earned run.
After the game, coaches told the ladies that they have beat Bourgade three times this season, including earlier-season action, and if they meet again in the playoffs it will be tough.
The Bobcats' 2A East Conference play got under way last Tuesday against Tombstone. Housley warned the Lady Bobcats the night before that every team in the conference will be coming after them, and they had better be ready to play at a top level.
Ellsworth came out ready, pitching a one-hitter in the Bobcats' 3-0 shutout. Ellsworth had 17 strikeouts in the contest.
Batten scored for the Bobcats in the first inning and Tibbitts and Batten score in the third.
Batten was 2-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a homerun. Tibbitts was 2-4 with a run and a triple.
On Friday, young Bobcats' pitcher Kayla Haro tried her hand against the Bisbee Pumas. Now 3-0 for the season, Haro pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts, one hit-by-pitch and one walk with one earned run allowed.
The Bobcats also got the job done on offense, going up 3-1 in the first and cruising to an 11-1 victory.
Solis led the charge, going 2-3 with three runs, a double, a walk and two stolen bases. Batten was 2-3 with two runs, a double, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases and Haro was 1-2 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base.
Wrapping up the week with another win, the Bobcats dominated Desert Christian 11-0.

At bat, first baseman Chelsea Layton went 2-2 with a run and a sacrifice. Solis was 2-4 with three runs, four RBIs, a triple and a homerun. Batten was 2-3 with three runs, two RBIs, a triple and a walk.
Solis tied Benson schools' career homerun record with the knock, and as a sophomore she will have two more seasons to break it.
The Lady Bobcats are now 4-0 in conference play and 13-0 for the season. They will have a break until March 25 when they will travel to Willcox for the first match of the season.
Last year the Bobcats were in a heated rivalry with their opponents to the east. The conference became tight and the Bobcats came out on top, breaking a tiebreaker game.
Willcox is currently 10-2 for the season.
