The St. David baseball team is excited to get onto the field as they welcome a new coach in Ron Goodman and get ready to play against some tough competition in their schedule this season.

The Tigers have gone 2-2 in the early beginnings of the season, having won games against Patagonia and Clifton and losing games against Duncan and Tanque Verde. The team will face some tough competition later in the season, including two games against number-one ranked Valley Union and a rematch against Tanque Verde, who beat them by a 21-2 score.

Jordan Tracey said one of the team's strengths in the first few games of the season has been their fielding, which has been consistently good this season. The hitting has been slower to come around, but the team is working hard to get better as they continue to play their games, he said.

Despite their solid pitching game this season, Clinton Goodman said the team still doesn't have the amount of pitchers they need. There are six players, including Cameron Judd, who would be on the team but can't play due to being injured or academically ineligible, he said.

Ammon Brimhall said that once the other players are able to return, the team will be in good shape going into the rest of the season.

"I know we'll be fine after we get everyone back," Brimhall said.

With Ron Goodman starting his first year at the helm of St. David baseball, Jordan Jacquez said members of the team have already noticed changes even in the way they practice. Practices have changed throughout the season depending on what the team's current weaknesses are and focus on trying to improve them, he said.

Acknowledging his coach's extensive experience with professional baseball teams and scouts, Clinton Goodman said that Goodman is able to help the players become better athletes and also prepare them for the next level of play.

With Goodman's consistency and discipline constantly driving them, Tracey said Goodman's coaching would definitely help the team when it's looking to make its playoff push late in the season.

"He knows what it takes to get there and pushes us," Tracey said.

As the players continue to prepare for the majority of their schedule, Tracey said one of the best aspects of the team this season has been its chemistry, with many players being close on and off the field. Being able to doing things like joke around with teammates makes it a more relaxed environment and more enjoyable to play baseball, he said.

Adding to the fun they have together, Tracey said some players have even received nicknames that have caught on with the players on the team. Tracey goes by the alias "Special K" due to his ability to strike players out, while Brimhall is the "Ice Cream Man" who scoops up the ball with ease, he said.

Knowing they will have their work cut out for them later in the season, Tracey said the team would benefit from playing against tough competition and will be able to consistently improve while their other opponents will stay stagnant.

"We're going to elevate our game and they're going to stay flat," Tracey said.

Having a positive outlook as they get further into the season, Jacquez said the players are confident and simply want to have fun playing baseball the rest of the way. Clinton Goodman said having the right outlook would be able to positively affect their play on the baseball field.

"If we have the right attitudes it will affect the way we play," Goodman said.
