Kiwanis extends help for supplies

The cost of buying school supplies, clothes and shoes for one child can be high, and if you have more than one child, it can cripple the monthly budget.

To help area families, each year the San Pedro Family Resource Council hosts the Back-to-School fair, and this year the Kiwanis Club is looking to make it even better.

Instead of offering just school supplies, the Kiwanis Club is donating socks to families.

Angela Carreira, a Kiwanis Club member and principal at San Pedro High School, said the San Pedro Family Resource Council does a good job every year helping families, and they wanted to do their part.

"We were looking at ideas and what we could do and going over all the expenses parents have today to send kids back to school," she said. "With back-to-school clothes, athletic equipment, shoes and supplies, it's really tough. Then someone thought of socks. They are expensive, and kids really do go through them fast."

The Kiwanis Club is asking the community for assistance. Any new socks, whether a single pair or a package, can be dropped off at places throughout the community.

With the Back-to-School fair Aug. 2, Carreira said they will be collecting donations through Aug. 1 at the Benson Public Schools District Office, Cochise College Benson Center, Apache Nitrogen Products, Inc., Wal-Mart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Curves.

"We are hoping to collect at least 500 pair or packages of socks so every child at the Back to School Fair can go home with some new socks for school," Carreira said. "Thank you in advance for helping us meet this goal."

For more information, Carreira can be reached at the San Pedro High School at 586-8901.
