The fifth annual Benson Youth Advocates Back to School Fair is set to kick off Saturday, Aug. 2, to celebrate students' return to school and provide them with free school supplies to help in the coming year.

The Back to School Fair will be held at Lion's Park and begin at 9 a.m., near the ramada area.

Gary Douglas, student resource officer for Benson schools who is helping with the fair, said they would be providing free backpacks filled with school supplies that will vary by age. He said students would receive school supplies targeted toward students in the K-4, 5-8 and high school age groups.

Last year, Douglas said they provided about 400 backpacks with supplies to local students and had a demand for close to 500.

In addition to the school supply handout, there will be booths from several local businesses and agencies to help educate students and show them how to stay out of danger.

Local agencies at this year's Back to School Fair include the Benson Food Pantry, Benson Hospital, Benson Police Department, Benson Animal Control, Benson Schools, the FCCLA Club, Cochise College, Cochise County Juvenile Department, San Pedro Family Resource Council, SEABHS Kids team and the First Baptist Church.

Other booths include the NASCAR Racing team, Dr. Pugnea DDS, the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension and Willcox Against Substance Abuse (WASA).

There will also be water slides, water balloon tosses, jumping castles and other fun activities and games for children attending the fair.

The Benson Youth Advocates are also asking those who come to bring food donations to the fair. Preferred donations include canned food and pet food.

Gloria Durgin, prevention specialist for the Benson Youth Advocates, said the event has been growing since it began and drew close to 500 people last year from Benson alone. Durgin said they wanted to provide many activities at this year's fair and hoped to have a total of 35 different business and agencies agree to help by the time the event starts.

Durgin said she is excited about the activities at this year's fair and is pleased to see how much it has grown over the past four years.

"We're looking forward to this year and all the fabulous things we're bringing in," Durgin said.

The Benson Youth Advocates will also be partnering with SEABHS and the Benson McDonald's to hold a Stuff the Bus event, where the bus is planned to be stuffed with donated school supplies for this year's Back to School Fair.

The Stuff the Bus event will be held Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the McDonald's on South State Highway 90.
