The St. David School District will see significant spending increases in special education and transportation this coming year as the district approved the adoption of the 2008-2009 district budget last week.

In the 2008-2009 total expenditure budget, the Maintenance and Operation fund would see a 3.6 percent increase to $3,293,031 compared to the $3,178,478 budgeted last year. The Instructional Improvement fund also saw a 7.6 percent increase to $16,000 compared with last year's $14,924 budget total.

In maintenance and operation expenditures, special education classroom instruction had an 11.7 percent budget increase to $444,930 from the $398,395 total last year. The expenditures also had Pupil Transportation seeing an 11.6 percent increase to $149,733 from $134,142 in last year's budget.

The district has also budgeted a total of $515,705 for Special Education Programs this year, compared to $467,495 last year.

St. David Schools Superintendent Kate Mueller said the district has been forced to approve its budget at the last minute in recent years since the state has been consistently late in approving the state budget. If the state legislature adjusts their budget mid-year, Mueller said the district could see some changes depending where the additional state cuts were made.

In other district updates, Mueller said the school has added a full-day kindergarten program this year and approved the hiring of an additional teacher for the class.

Mueller said the school would also be running two bus routes during in the afternoon, which would let the school dismiss elementary students earlier in the day and would help provide more after-school tutoring opportunities.

The St. David School District is scheduled to start school on Aug. 7.
