The St. David varsity volleyball team continued to prepare for the upcoming postseason with two wins against St. Gregory and another win against Green Fields later in the week.

In the first of a double-header match, St. David played an efficient first game and survived a tough second game before putting away the St. Gregory Hawks 3-0.

St. David took the opening game 25-11 and warded off a strong effort by St. Gregory to take the next two games 27-25 and 25-6 to win the match in three games.

Kaydee McWhorter had a good outing to lead the Tigers over the Hawks with five aces, 14 assists and going for a perfect 16-for-16 in serving. Breana Carpenter also helped fill the stat sheet with three kills, four blocks and an ace to help lead St. David in the game.

Later that day, St. David rode the momentum from their win in the first match and swept St. Gregory 3-0 for the second straight game.

St. David had an even stronger performance against the St. Gregory Hawks the second time around, taking three games of 25-19, 27-12 and 25-9 to win the match.

Several St. David players led a strong all-around effort for the Tigers. Breana Carpenter went for two blocks, one kill and an ace and Kayla Carpenter had two kills and a block against the Hawks.

Later in the week, St. David dropped the opening game against the Green Fields Griffins before working their way back for a 3-1 victory.

The game was competitive from the start with Green Fields taking the first game 25-22 before St. David came back for a 25-15 win to tie the match at 1-1. St. David kept getting the scores they needed to win the next two games 25-5 and 25-21 to help finish off the Griffins.

Several St. David players had big days at the net, with Taylor Brubaker and Kayla Carpenter going for 11 kills each and Breana Carpenter adding 10 kills of her own with two aces and two blocks.

With the win over Green Fields, St. David improved to 18-1 and maintained their first-place ranking atop the 1A South. St. David is a perfect 11-0 in conference play and leads second-ranked Academy of Tucson by three games.

St. David will play their final regular season game against the 2A Benson Bobcats (10-6) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
