Thelma Grimes//San Pedro Valley News-Sun
The Bobcats' defense struggled against the pass Friday night in Tombstone, but came up with two interceptions, and a fumble ended the Yellowjackets' hope of an upset.
The Bobcats cruised their way to a perfect 4-0 record in 2A East conference play, beating the Yellowjackets 52-20.
Runner Kyle Graf continues to rack up the yards, gaining 286 on the ground. Graf is now ranked number one in the state among all running backs with 1,550 yards.
The Bobcats started off slow in the first quarter, with the only score coming from tight end Brady Fenn who found the end zone on a four-yard pass from quarterback Mark Mabry. Mabry was 3 for 5 for 41 yards.
In the second quarter, Graf ran in from 12 yards out, and Cory Graf scored a touchdown from six yards out. Tombstone's first score came late in the first half on a 78-yard touchdown pass.
The senior Graf had a big night as well, gaining 109 yards on 16 carries. Chris Taylor had 44 of the 524 total yards the Bobcats had on the ground.
Tombstone trailed the Bobcats 19-7 at halftime. Graf missed two of the three extra-point attempts.
In the third quarter, after Kyle Graf extended the Bobcats' lead with a two-yard touchdown run, Tombstone struck right back, on another long pass from 80 yards out. With the extra point, the Bobcats led at the end of the third quarter 25-14.
In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats took care of business. Graf scored a 28-yard touchdown, and then senior Derrick Fenn recovered a fumble, taking it 16 yards to the house. Mabry capped off the Bobcats' scoring, finding the end zone from 13 yards out.
Tombstone scored one more time in the fourth on a 10-yard touchdown run.
"We played well in the second half," said Coach Chris Determan. "The defense really came out and set the tone early. The offensive line did a good job of opening holes for the backs and we had a great game running the football."
Cory Graf led the Bobcats' defense with seven tackles and Dain Dastrup and Taylor each had six tackles.
This week the Bobcats hope to finish the regular conference season on a perfect note as they host long-time rival Willcox. The game is not only for the conference championship, but also for the traditional Seney-Lohman Trophy.
The Bobcats will be playing to keep the traveling trophy in Benson.
In a non-conference game earlier this season, the Bobcats defeated Willcox 32-7.
Kickoff is 7 p.m.
