Benson Primary kindergarten teacher Trish Hermes was named the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, honoring success in the classroom.
In a surprise ceremony last Friday in Benson Primary School's multipurpose room, students and teachers gathered to watch Hermes accept the Teacher of the Year award. Hermes was presented with the award from two local Wal-Mart representatives, Assistant Manager Cindy Bohnen-kamp and UPC Office Clerk Jamie Herrera, from the Wal-Mart store in Benson.
The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award is one of the largest teacher recognition programs in the country, with each Wal-Mart store in all 50 states selecting a winning teacher from their local communities.
After receiving her teaching certification in 1972, Hermes has spent 34 years in education. She has spent the last 23 years teaching kindergarten in Benson and also spent six years teaching at the Community Presbyterian Church Preschool and five years teaching 7th and 8th grade math and science in Willcox.
After being surprised with the honor, Hermes said she was glad to be recognized for her teaching efforts and receive one of the first major teaching honors of her educational career.
"I'm speechless and really happy to be honored," Hermes said.
Hermes said the true satisfaction in her job comes when she sees how much her students have grown over the course of a semester. When a teacher and student are together from August until May, students change and teachers have the responsibility of putting them on the right path.
Benson Primary School Principal Jomel Jansson praised Hermes for running a very structured classroom and building a positive rapport with both students and parents. When a student is enrolled in Hermes' class, there is no question that achievement is a top priority, she said.
"Ms. Hermes is a fabulous teacher; she works hard and dedicates a great deal to creating a successful classroom," Jansson said.
After spending 23 years in kindergarten, Hermes said the number one thing that kept her teaching kindergarten is helping young students grow and discover about all kinds of new things. Hermes hopes to teach kindergarten for at least another five to six years and wants to continue being a part of Benson schools and the community.
"It's the best place to be and I don't want to be anywhere else," Hermes said.
