The Holiday Inn Express in Benson was recently honored with the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) 2008 Torchbearer Award, the company's third Torchbearer Award and sixth major award since it opened nine years ago.
The Holiday Inn Express in Benson was one of 53 properties chosen from around 3,800 hotels for achieving the highest excellence in all aspects of operation, from quality of service to customer satisfaction.
The Torchbearer Awards were presented in a ceremony during the 2008 IHG Americas Investors and Leadership Conference in Los Angeles, Sept. 24 to 26. Maggie McEnery, owner of the Holiday Inn Express in Benson, and Martha Bersano, Regional Manager, attended the event and accepted the award.
Including this year's award, Bersano said the Holiday Inn Express in Benson has received the Torchbearer Award a total of three times, taking the honor in 2001 and 2002. The Holiday Inn also received the Quality of Excellence Award in 2000, 2003 and 2004.
Bersano said the awards are given based on feedback from guests and how the IHG Company rates the performance of each hotel.
Bersano credits the hard work of the hotel staff for the praise they've received since opening the Holiday Inn Express in 1998.
"We feel blessed to have the people we have working here," Bersano said. "The employees are the key to our success."
With the opening of Gracie's Restaurant in the coming months, Bersano feels they will have even more to offer guests with a fine dining establishment located right next to the hotel.
Bersano said Gracie's is still hiring workers and has several more weeks of construction work before the projected opening in either December or January.
Ethel Smith, who has worked at the Holiday Inn Express for nearly eight years, believes it is one of the ideal places to work in the Benson area. The management and owners have always been very supportive of their workers and the awards they received show the great amount of success they have had.
"It shows the high standards the owners have, which reflects on us and we give that standard to our guests," Smith said.
Smith said the employees are all about personal service at the Holiday Inn Express and she credits a team effort by the hotel staff to help make it all happen.
"You don't get long-term employees without good owners and good management," Smith said.
