Marine Corps League toy collection set
The Cpl. G. Salcedo Detachment, Marine Corps League will again be at Benson Wal-Mart to accept toys for the local girls and boys.
Final collection will be held Friday, Dec. 12 and Saturday, Dec. 13. Local former Marines will man the booth from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each date.
Christmas food, toy baskets applications
Applications to receive Christmas food and toy baskets are available at the Department of Economic Security Family Assistance Office in Benson.
Application deadline is Friday, Dec. 5.
Baskets will be delivered Tuesday, Dec. 23.
Leaders sought
for Girl Scout troops
Adult leaders for Girls Scouts are sought to accommodate girls in Benson and surrounding areas who want to become Girl Scouts.
Additionally, troop meeting sites are also needed. Anyone interested in helping lead a troop can call Rita Billiard, Girl Scout consultant at the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council at (520)-439-5042 or 1-800-331-6782.
Girls can join as young as kindergarten as Daisy Girl Scouts and remain through their senior year in school.
VFW fundraising
dinner resumes Dec. 5
VFW Post 6271, 233 E. 5th St., Benson, is not holding its weekly dinner Friday, Nov. 28.
Sunday bingo will be held as scheduled at 6 p.m. Kitchen opens one hour prior.
San Pedro Valley High School graduation set
San Pedro Valley High School will recognize its December 2008 graduates during the semi-annual Graduation Ceremony and Recognition Night Thursday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m., at Cochise College Benson Center.
Dr. David Woodall, superintendent of Benson Public Schools, is the keynote speaker. Graduates include Allison Christiansen, Colton Dixon, Britney Gregory, Steven Martinez, Samantha Moore, Kelly Natter, Barbara Powell, Desiree Taylor and Brandon Triplett.
Students of the Month will also be honored. They are Gabrielle Smith, August and Steven Martinez, September.
Eagles bingo
weekly; fish fry
The Benson Eagles No. 3593 weekly bingo is now Wednesday with early bird game at 6 p.m. Progressive cover all is at 60 numbers or less for $500. Ticket sales begin at 5:30 p.m. and kitchen opens at 5 p.m.
The Eagles host a fish fry every other Friday. The next one will be held Nov. 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Eagles Aerie is located at 750 E. 4th St. Call 586-3043 for more information.

Festival canceled
The Visions Unlimited Academy has canceled the Winter Festival scheduled on Dec. 6.
Community Christmas Celebration Dec. 14
The San Pedro Valley Community Christmas Celebration, hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be Sunday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the chapel just north of I-10 on Pomerene Road.
Voices from all area congregations will unite in celebration of the Christmas season. Soloists, a brass and string ensemble, organ and piano music will accompany the choir. An invitation is extended to those 16 years and older who like to sing. Call Robin Fenn for rehearsal schedule at 586-4344. There is no charge and the event is open to the public.
Senior bingo games held each Monday
Senior bingo is held each Monday at the Benson Senior/Community Center, 705 West Union St., beginning at 1 p.m. Players should arrive by 12:45 p.m. One dollar per card for the first 12 games then a quarter per card for the cover-all game. Must be 18 to play.

to work with youths
Benson Middle School has been awarded a 21st Century Learning Grant which provides after school tutoring, enrichment, and social activities for students in grades 5-8.
Volunteers who wish to work with youth in all areas and make a difference in the lives of children are currently being sought.

City 2009 dog
licenses available
City dog licenses for 2009 can be purchased at Benson City Hall for 2009. The city requires dogs 4 months and older, kept within city limits at least two months to have a certificate of rabies vaccination and current dog license. The 2009 license fee is $10 for spayed or neutered dogs, $20 all others.
City Hall is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding major holidays, Dogs must be current on rabies shots to obtain a 2009 license.
Pet owners who need assistance for low cost spay, neuter or vaccinations, can call the Benson Animal Shelter at 586-3600.
Lions monthly
breakfast Dec. 7
Benson Lions' all-you- can-eat breakfast will be held Sunday, Dec. 7 . Menu features pancakes, eggs, two pieces of bacon, juice, coffee or tea from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lions Club, 599 S. Dragoon St. Lions bingo held on Fridays. Doors open at 4 p.m., early birds start at 6:30 p.m.
Register for Cochise College spring classes
Registration for Spring 2009 classes is ongoing at Cochise College-Benson Center. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Benson Center will be closed for the Thanksgiving Nov. 27 to Nov. 30. The Center will also close for the winter break from Dec. 20 through Jan. 4. Contact the Benson Center staff at (520) 586-1981.

Bethlehem in SV
Mountain View Assembly of God, 102 North Colombo, Sierra Vista, offers its annual outdoor dramatic presentation, "Walk Thru Bethlehem", complete with actors and animals on Wednesday, Dec. 10, Thursday, Dec. 11, and Friday, Dec. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
No admission is charged. Live entertainment and complimentary hot cocoa, and cookies. Salvation Army containers for non-perishable food donations are available. A petting zoo and a hay ride are available at the end of the tour.
Post office window service on Saturdays
The Benson Post Office now offers window service on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., according to Postmaster Lesley Tower.
