Indianapolis, Ind., was the final destination for the Benson FFA Chapter and the state-winning livestock judging team. The team consisted of Jessica Zamudio, Sheldon Thomas, Caitlyn Olson, and Cheyanne Keith. The Benson FFA chapter's advisor, Gilbert Zamudio had high hopes for the team to do well. The national competition was tough and there was a challenging written test the day before the judging contest.
The journey to Indianapolis was a long one but well worth it. Benson stopped in Warner, Okla. at Connors State College to practice judging with the college judging team. Then they moved on to Arkansas State University, where the chapter met with the advisor's son, Joey Zamudio, who is a member of the university's Livestock Judging team. Along with judging at the university, the chapter also got to tour part of the agricultural section of the University and got to tour the university's hog farm.
From there they headed to Kentucky. They stopped in Louisville and toured Churchhill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Also, while in Louisville, the chapter took a swing through the Louisville Slugger museum. "For some members this is a once in a lifetime trip. We try our best to make it worth their while." stated Mr. Zamudio.
The chapter arrived the day before the convention started. A grand total of roughly 53,000 FFA members attended from throughout the nation. Blue and gold was painted over Indianapolis. The first day of the convention they visited the National FFA center and the National FFA merchandise center.
The night of the award banquet for the judging team came with achievement and disappointment. Benson was not the National winner or runner up. The team received a silver medal and Zamudio was proud of them for that.
"It was fun running with the big dogs" said Jessica Zamudio after the competition. As individuals, Olson, Jessica Zamudio, and Keith received silver medals, and Thomas received a Bronze medal. "It was a disappointment when we only received a silver medal, but we decided silver looks better than gold," Cheyanne Keith stated after the awards banquet, trying to keep a positive attitude.
Winding down after the competition the last day, the team and other members, Hannah Ryan, Ashton Thomas, Rebecca Wells, and Marcus Pruitt went to the career show. While there, the chapter saw a familiar face. Benson's own Baxter Black was at the convention signing and selling his books. He congratulated the team on their achievement.
The team may have not gotten exactly what they wished for but they went, competed, and showed the National FFA what Arizona is all about.
