Sherriff's office: Alcohol played role in crash involving Benson teens
Chris Dabovich/San Pedro Valley News-Sun
Four Benson teenagers escaped serious injury Tuesday morning when the Jeep they were in flipped end-over-end, authorities said.
Cochise County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said deputies were dispatched to an area off Cascabel Road shortly after receiving a 911 call at 3:10 a.m. from an 18-year-old woman who reported being in the one-vehicle crash.
Capas identified the woman as Brittany Seiler of Benson. Three male juveniles were on board as well, said Capas.
The teens were in a Jeep Wrangler in the San Pedro River bed when the vehicle hit a sink hole, which then caused the vehicle to flip end-over-end. None of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt and all were ejected, said Capas.
She said the driver, a 16-year-old Benson boy, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and underage consumption of alcohol.
Seiler was transported by helicopter to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, said Capas.
It took authorities about three hours to find the wreckage, said Capas. The initial caller said they were in the Tres Alamos wash but they were actually four miles north of that area. The DPS Ranger helicopter had to wait 90 minutes to depart Phoenix because of weather conditions. San Pedro Valley temperatures dipped into the 40s Tuesday morning.
There were no ages available on the other two male passengers. Capas did say they are juveniles.

Zero Tolerance BAC: Allowable blood alcohol content for minors (as defined by the state). This percentage can be as low as 0% (meaning no alcohol content may be detected-hence the term “zero tolerance.”) or as high as 0.02%.
Good luck with your friend's 0.01 BAC in court. It's completely up to the judge's discretion at this point. "

" Cory,
The article didn't say your friend was intoxicated. A 16 year old shouldn't be drinking and driving period regardless of what he blew. I hate the thought of teenagers drinking (any amount of alcohol) and driving on the very street I drive my children around on.
I have a family member who was killed in a teenage driving accident. That teenager was technically not intoxicated either. I hope the judge in this case using the situation to send Benson teenagers a message. Drinking and driving is serious!!!!! "

" If the teen blew a ".01" BAC...and it was at least 90 min for search plus the time spent goofing in the wash...maybe at least 30 min....the driver was definitely intoxicated when driving to the accident scene. Cory should just be grateful to be alive without life-long injuries instead of defending his potential killer. "
