Local residents will have the opportunity to turn unwanted property into cash and bid on a vast array of items at a consignment auction next month.
The auction will he held Saturday, Feb. 21, at Iveco Auctioneers, 1150 S. Highway 80, between Benson and St. David.
Iveco is accepting sale listings for a variety of items like heavy equipment, vehicles, RVs, tools, antiques, household items, collectibles, hay and other miscellaneous property.
Blaine Partridge, investment recovery specialist for a subsidiary of Iveco Auctioneers, said this was his company's first time bringing an auction to the Benson area and there should be a variety of items available for potential buyers.
People who have provided listings can bring in the auction items on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and they will be issued a lot number for sorting purposes.
Partridge said their duty as auctioneers is to advertise the item, sell it and clear out the lot to sell even more items. Even with online bidding services like Ebay gaining popularity, auctions continue to be a place where buyers and sellers can get great deals not found elsewhere.
"It's the fairest form of marketing I know, because you establish the price you want to pay," Partridge said.
Partridge, a graduate of the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, has been an auctioneer for over 40 years. Partridge has received several awards for his auctioneering skills, including being named the state Auctioneering Champion in 1985 from the Nebraska Auctioneers Association.
Partridge, who originally hails from North Loupe, Neb., said auctions are still very common in the Midwest and have a designated "auction time" on radio stations every morning.
"Auctions are so dominant back home," Partridge said, "the towns there are plastered with sale bills."
Partridge believes there is a certain mystique about an old-style auction event. Even when people had to live without luxuries such as color television, auctions were always there, he said.
"It's a form of recreation and a form of entertainment," Partridge said.
Concessions will also be available at the event, he added.
Those interested in selling items at the upcoming consignment auction can contact Partridge at (520) 686-1091 or fax (520) 586-9576. Partridge can also be e-mailed at ivecoauction@yahoo.com.
