An expired license plate tag led to discovery of 529 pounds of marijuana on Interstate 10 east of Benson last week.

DPS officer Joy Craig, a department spokeswoman, said the bust occurred at milepost 312 on I-10, six miles east of Benson, Thursday, Jan. 29, at about 8:37 a.m.

She said a patrolman noticed the expired tag on the 1995 Ford pickup truck. The officer then ran his canine partner, Becky, around the vehicle and the dog allerted to the presense of drugs, said Craig.

The driver, and a passenger, neither of whose identity was disclosed, were arrested.

A total of 529.5 pounds of marijuana, and the vehicle were seized.

"This enforcement action is part of the Arizona Department of Public Safety's continued effort to disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations that grow or manufacture, transport, and sell illegal drugs, in order to make communities in Arizona and across the United States safer places to live," said Craig in the news release.
