Benson FBLA team dominates regional

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, 23 Benson High School students, along with six Benson Middle Schoolers, traveled to Thatcher High School for the Future Business Leaders of America Southern Arizona Regional Conference. The 29 members combined their business talents to bring home 35 trophies.
"With almost twice as many students competing this year (540), I knew winning trophies was going to be more challenging," Benson High School FBLA sponsor Tina Gudvangen said, "but it turned out that I was wrong." Placing at the conference for Benson were: Junior Marlene Daiz, who placed 5th in Job Interview; sophomore Kjel Gudvangen took 1st and senior Brady Fenn took 4th in Accounting I; in Accounting II, senior Victoria Obergh took 3rd, and senior Jessica Edmiston placed 4th; in Word Processing, sophomore Britany Boegemann placed 2nd: in Public Speaking II: Victoria took 5th. The team of senior Kayla McMinimy, junior Dain Dastrup, and Fenn took 4th in Management Decision Making; in Business Ethics, the team of juniors Jesse Tapia and Danielle Kunst placed 3rd, and the team of juniors Chelsey Layton, Sarah Kading, and Tyler Deneweth placed 5th; senior Caleb Shull placed 4th in Personal Finance and Jessica placed 3rd; Boegemann placed 2nd in Business Math; the team of junior Michael Vivian, senior Nick Davis, and Obergh took 1st in Business Presentation; Kunst placed 3rd in Client Services; in FBLA Principles and Procedures sophomore Zack Phillips placed 4th and sophomore Savannah Quiroz placed 1st; in Impromptu Speaking, Dastrup took 2nd, and McMinimy took 4th; in Introduction to Business, Gudvangen placed 2nd; sophomore Courtney Merrill took 1st in Business Communication: and in the Name Tag event, Kunst placed 3rd.
Placing at the middle school level for Benson were: eighth-grader Gunner Kelly placed 1st in Computer Concepts; eighth-grader Haley Choate placed 1st in FBLA Principles and Procedures; in Proof Reading and Editing, eighth-grader Emily Gudvangen placed 4th; seventh-grader Mollie Wiegand placed 3rd and Kelly placed 1st in Business Math; and in Introduction to Business, Wiegand took 1st.
"Benson continued to perform very well with our juniors filling the hole left by the 12 seniors who graduated last year," Gudvangen said. "Our students are such great problem solvers and presenters. We really need to thank parents and teachers for giving them the skills and confidence to compete with spectacular results."
"Our team did really well at regionals. We definitely represented Benson well," BHS senior Brady Fenn said. "I am looking forward to competing at state and hopefully qualifying for nationals." The next FBLA competition will be the State Leadership Conference in Tucson from April 6-8 with the top winners from each category eligible for nationals in Anaheim, Calif.
