Candidate forum scheduled Thursday

The SKP Saguaro Co-op is hosting a candidate forum on Thursday for Benson City Council candidates. The forum will start at 7:30 p.m., at the park located at 600 E. Saguaro Dr. off State Route 80.

The event will feature candidates running for mayor and the three City Council seats. While the SKP Park is a private membership establishment, the event must be open to the public, since it will have a quorum of current City Council members in attendance.

By law, City Clerk Vicki Vivian said that because a majority of the council is expected to attend, notices of the forum have been posted as a public meeting, and all residents are welcome.

Incumbents Mayor Mark Fenn, Vice Mayor Toney King and council members David Lambert and Lori McGoffin have confirmed they will be attending.

Also attending will be challengers for mayor Frank Hough Jr. and Kathy Suagee and council candidates Cliff Deane and Dianne Tipton.

This would be only the second candidate forum for the upcoming Primary Election. Last month, the Northern Cochise County Democrats hosted a forum where all candidates except for Vice Mayor King attended.

(Editor's note: While the candidate forum is being held after the Wednesday press run for the San Pedro Valley News-Sun, coverage of the event will be posted on our Web site at www.bensonnews-sun.com by Friday morning.)
