The Benson golf team is on a roll in the 2009 season, winning their first three meets.

Joe Ryan picked up where he left off last season, leading the Bobcats' golfers in all competitions to date.

On March 3, the Bobcats opened the season with a win at the 49ers Golf Course in Tucson.

Of the four teams competing, Benson finished victorious by the score of 191 and Tanque Verde finished at 215. Ajo and St. Gregory did not have four golfers in the contest, which is the minimum needed to compete.

Individually for the Bobcats, senior Joe Ryan, who finished third individually at the 2008 1A/2A State Golf Championship, shot a 39, sophomore Nathan McGoffin shot a 47, sophomore Zac Phillips shot a 52 and junior Nathan Borders shot a 53.

Of the four teams, Ryan was also the low scorer for the match.

"The 49ers Course is tough to play because it has out-of-bounds on every hole," Coach Fred Comaduran said. "Joe and Nathan both shot good matches, but anything above a 50 on this course needs to be worked on."

A week later, on March 10, the Bobcats hosted Bisbee, Cobre, and Willcox at the San Pedro Golf Course.

Once again, Benson out-played all three of their opponents to take first place, scoring 180. Bisbee took second with 191, Willcox finished with 212, and Cobre 252.

Individually for the Bobcats, Ryan shot a par 36, Phillips shot a 44, Borders shot a 45, and sophomore Kjel Gudvangen shot a 55.

Ryan was again the low scorer of the match.

"Ryan's par 36 was seven strokes better than the next best individual of this match," Comaduran said. "Par is an excellent score and Ryan's goal is to always be par or better."

Two days later, the Bobcats again hosted a match, this time facing off against Thatcher, Empire, and St. Gregory.

Even though it was windy and cold, the Bobcats continued their winning ways, overpowering their competition by a minimum of 11 strokes.

Benson finished the day with a 185, followed by Thatcher with 196, St. Gregory with 230, and Empire with 244.

Ryan led all golfers with a 41, five over par, McGoffin shot a 44, Phillips had 45, and Gudvangen and Borders finished with a 55.

"Ryan was definitely not happy with his 41, but with the weather conditions, that was a good score," Comaduran said. "Phillips is also doing a good job, keeping his scores in the low 40s. McGoffin showed good improvement over the last match. Consistency is critical in golf."

Other Benson High School golfers who have been competing include: freshmen Matt Bivens, Michael Trepanier, Gavin Meeks, and Tom Kilpatrick. Sophomores on the team include Jovante Light and John Ward. Junior Christopher Hoffman, and senior Caleb Shull are also competing.

"With the exception of Surrey Gardens, Canyon State, and Desert Christian high schools, we've faced all our conference competition," Comaduran said. "With steady improvement, finishing in the top four at the regional meet in May is a definite possibility. The early-season regional favorite appears to be Desert Christian."

The Bobcats' next match will be the Thatcher Golf Invitational Saturday, at 9 a.m.

The field will include 16 to 18 1A through 3A teams.
