There are new efforts under way to build a community food garden in east Benson. An informational meeting on the new project is being held on Saturday at the San Pedro Golf Course.

Project organizer Maxine Jackson said the community garden is planned on some property near the lower Circle K in east Benson, and is owned by DG Ranch, home of the San Pedro Valley Vineyard.

Jackson said they are offering residents throughout the San Pedro Valley the opportunity to share in creating a community garden. There will be an annual fee of $25 per plot. Each irrigated plot is 9 feet by 18 feet.

"A community food garden is a place where people can get help with their gardening ideas," Jackson said. "The land is already flat and prepped for planting. It's just in the community's best interest to have affordable earth-friendly food."

Jackson said many residents may be interested in gardening but need some assistance getting started, or they may want to take it up and don't have the required land to do so.

This project will give all of them an opportunity.

"For the most part, organic gardeners are scattered," Jackson said. "This is a place for all of them to come together to share information and practices."

To participate, organic gardeners must be willing to maintain their assigned plot in a manner that respects the environment as well as other gardeners, and at the start, will be asked to sign a pledge of commitment and compliance.

Those interested can attend the community meeting at the San Pedro Golf Course in north Benson on Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., or call Jackson at 720-5107.
