A traffic stop near Benson last week led to discovery of nearly half a ton of marijuana, an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokeswoman said.

The seizure occurred when an officer attempted to stop a 2000 Ford Utility truck on Interstate 10 about five miles west of Benson for speeding. A pursuit ensued as the vehicle fled westbound, said DPS spokeswoman Joy Craig.

The vehicle took the Empirita exit and continued on a dirt road at a high rate of speed, she said.

Concerned for motorists, the officer discontinued the pursuit, but continued along the dirt road at a safe speed. The officer located the vehicle abandoned a short while later with a destroyed oil pan, said Craig. Located in the truck were 44 bundles of marijuana totaling 910 pounds.

The driver, described as an Hispanic male, clad in hardhat and a reflective construction vest, fled on foot and eluded arrest, said Craig.
