Union Pacific Railroad has recently announced several closings with railroad crossings throughout Benson as they upgrade them.
Benson Public Works Director Brad Hamilton said they are trying to get the word out, since the railroad gave them short notice for the upcoming repairs.
Hamilton said it's his understanding that the railroad will be redoing the centerpieces at the crossings to make them "smoother and easier."
Hamilton said the closures are going to cause inconvenience for residents, especially at Benson Airport Road. The crossing is scheduled to close at 6 a.m. Sunday, May 3, and reopen by 6 p.m. on May 4.
While that is Cochise County jurisdiction, Hamilton said residents would likely have to use Astronomer's Lane to get into town. The dirt road is going to be a major inconvenience, he said.
The first closure is on Monday at Ocotillo Avenue, and the second will be on Patagonia Street on Sunday, starting at 6 a.m. Hamilton said hopefully the work will go smoothly and all crossings will be reopened by 6 p.m. the next day as planned.
The third closure is on April 26 at San Pedro Street. Hamilton said when the work is being done at the Patagonia Street crossing, motorists can use San Pedro as the alternative. They can use San Pedro as the alternative when work is being done on Patagonia Street.
