FBLA team competes at State Leadership Conference

On Monday, April 6, the Benson High School Future Business Leaders of America Chapter traveled to Tucson for the State Leadership Conference.
With 1,100 students representing 72 1A-5A schools, Benson brought home 21 trophies and placed third in the Sweepstakes Award, an award given to the top three schools in the state.
Placing individually at the conference was Sophomore Savannah Quiroz, who placed first in FBLA Principles and Procedures and received a $250 scholarship to help pay for Nationals. In Job Interview, Chelsey Layton took second. In Accounting, sophomore Kjel Gudvangen, placed second, senior Caleb Shull placed third, and senior Brady Fenn placed fourth. In Word Processing I, sophomore Courtney Merrill placed second, and sophomore Brittany Boegemann placed fifth. In Impromptu Speaking, junior Dain Dastrup placed third. In Introduction to Business Communications, Merrill took third. In Business Math Gudvangen placed third, and in Client Services, junior Danielle Kunst placed fifth.
Placing in the team events, juniors Sarah Kading and Chelsey Layton, placed first in the Community Service Project, a written report highlighting the events of our Green Week environmental project.
"It was a lot of hard work and dedication," said Kading, "but in the end it paid off big, now I get to go to Disneyland!"
Placing in the team events were, juniors Michael Vivian and Marleen Diaz, third in Emerging Business Issues. In Chapter Feud, the team of Gudvangen, Shull, Fenn, Merrill, and senior Jessica Edmiston took first. In Battle of the Chapters, the team of sophomore Zack Phillips, freshman Leigha Brown, and Quiroz, placed second. In Business Presentation, the team of senior Tori Obergh and Vivian placed third. In Business Graphics the team of, Obergh, Kading, sophomore Tamara Choate, and senior Nick Davis, placed third. In Management Decision Making, the team of, senior Kayla McMinimy, Fenn, and Dastrup, placed fourth.
Seven students, Fenn, Kading, Layton, Diaz, Vivian, Quiroz and Gudvangen, qualified to represent Benson High School and the state of Arizona at the FBLA National Conference to be held in Anaheim, Calif., June 23-29.
