Working to find homes for displaced animals at Robertson Horse Sales
Thelma Grimes/San Pedro Valley News-Sun
Working to find homes for out-of-place horses, Robertson Horse Sales in north Benson holds an auction on the second Saturday of each month, with the next one scheduled for this weekend.
Robertson said he's been in the business for the last 30 years, and being a rancher is becoming harder every year. The industry continues to get a bad reputation for the bad actions of a few.
"No one works harder for less pay than a rancher," said Robertson, who owns land near the San Pedro Golf Course. "The thing that means the most to us is the livestock on the land and our reputation."
Robertson said he understands how hard it can be at times to find homes for a horse people may not be able to care for, which is why he holds the monthly auctions.
The tack auction begins at 9 a.m. this Saturday, and the horse auction begins at 1 p.m.
Robertson also hosts auctions featuring cattle, dispersals, law enforcement seizure items, automobiles, industrial equipment and restaurant equipment.
Robertson said being a rancher is a tough industry, and they have to do what they can to survive.
"Some people claim to be ranchers, but they aren't," he said. "Ranchers seem to be getting the reputation of being greedy, but we do the best we can for our land and our animals. We try to find these horses a home the best we can."
With some horses, Robertson said they work to find a home that will be the best fit for the animal, and they never knowingly sell a horse for slaughter.
"Our ultimate goal here is just to find the animal a home," he said. "There are some that have horses and don't know what they are doing. It is these people that are ruining the reputation of the greatest industry in the world."
