Barbara Kartchner from St. David was named to the Dairy Council of Arizona's All-American team last month. She was one of only 13 girls in the state to win the award.
To qualify for the award there were certain criteria that had to be met. Kartchner had to finish with a high GPA, be an all-region or all-state selection in a sport, give back to the community, and participate at school in something other than sports.
Kartchner sports a 3.8 GPA, was named first-team all-region for the second year in a row, accumulated 1,400 hours of community service, including earning her Young Women's Medallion for the LDS church program for women between the ages of 12-18, and she also participates in several programs offered at St. David High School.
Kartchner is a member of the DECA Club, the Students of Service club, the National Honor Society, senior class president, student body treasurer, former sophomore and freshmen class vice president.
On top of meeting that criteria, Kartchner had to also submit a portfolio that was to be reviewed by the committee before she could be named an All-American.
Tot Workman, who organized this program about 17 years ago, called Kartchner shortly after the end of the basketball season and let her know about the program.
After all the paper work was submitted, Kartchner received a phone call from Workman letting her know that she was one of only two girls from 1A schools to earn the prestigious award and one of only 13 total girls in the state who qualified.
Kartchner said, "I was really honored to have received this award. It just goes to show that if you work really hard at something, sooner or later you will be rewarded, but most importantly, you will learn something from those experiences. I am grateful to my family, coaches, and other mentors that I have for teaching and supporting me in everything I do."
Her coach, Ira Lewis said, "As a coach I couldn't be more happy for one of my players. To receive this award just goes to show you what a good person Barbara really is. She didn't win any all-state recognition, when she should have, but programs like the Dairy Council of Arizona's All-American Team does recognize all the hard work on and off the court, in school and away from school, and in their communities that people like Barbara do. I am very proud of her."
