About 145 students in the San Pedro Valley will be honored at an annual graduation ceremony, receiving the diploma that says they are ready for the real world.

The St. David School District will kick off the ceremonies with graduations on Thursday night.

The eighth-grade promotion ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. in the high school gymnasium, followed by the high school graduation at 8 p.m., where about 40 students are set to receive diplomas.

"Each graduating class has unique character traits," said St. David Principal Mark Goodman. "For the Class of 2009, we will always remember their sense of humor and desire for individuality. We will miss this class as they leave to pursue their dreams. Their futures are bright, and we look forward to seeing the world change as these young adults become leaders in both the public and private sectors."

Leading the Tigers' Class of 2009 is Ammon Brimhall, named the class valedictorian Monday morning.

In a close contest academically, both Devon Kartchner and Anika Mayberry will hold the class salutatorian spot.

San Pedro Valley High School, a charter school in the Benson School District, will hold graduation ceremonies for about 35 students on Tuesday, May 26, at 6 p.m.

The ceremony will be held at the Cochise College Benson Center on State Route 90, and the guest speaker will be Scott Kilbury, morning news anchor for Channel 13 in Tucson. Kilbury is a graduate of Benson High School.

Benson's eighth-grade promotion ceremony will be held at the high school gymnasium on Wednesday, May 27, at 6 p.m.

Benson will be graduating about 70 students on Thursday, May 28, at an 8 p.m. ceremony inside the high school gym.

Bryan Bullington, principal of the high school, said he will miss a lot of the students in the Class of 2009. As he flipped through the school's yearbook, he pointed out many students who he feels will make a mark on the world.

"This is an outstanding group of kids," Bullington said. "They are just a great group to work with."

Leading Benson's Class of 2009 is valedictorian Jessica Edmiston, who is also the school's National Honor Society president and the secretary of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes club.

Edmiston plans to attend the University of Arizona and major in accounting.

Victoria Obergh holds the number two spot as class salutatorian. Obergh also is a member of the National Honor Society as was the manager for the football, basketball and track programs.
