Authorities are seeking the public's assistance in finding the white male subject responsible for the death of a 28-year-old Tucson mom who was run off Interstate 10 near Benson Sunday night.

Benson-based Department of Public Safety Patrolman Martin Tapia, who worked the 11:40 a.m. accident at milepost 301, said the Sierra Vista unit is investigating the incident, but he worked the scene at milepost 301.

Tapia said it appears that a man driving a red-colored compact car sideswiped Heather Portz, of Tucson, in the westbound lane. Portz, driving a gray 2000 Jeep Cherokee lost control and rolled. Portz was ejected and pronounced dead at Benson Hospital. Her 2-year-old son, who Tapia said was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries.

Tapia said it was a tough scene to work, and he is hoping that the man responsible for the collision will come forward, or the public will hear the report and help find him.

Witnesses at the scene described the hit and run vehicle as a red, four-door compact driven by a white male wearing some type of baseball cap. Police suspect that the vehicle will have gray paint transfer from the victim's car on the left rear quarter panel.

Anyone with information is urged to call DPS at (620) 223-2212 or call the local line at 586-3957.
