St. David's Class of 2009 bids farewell to high school Thursday among a barrage of hugs, cheers and tears.

Thirty-seven seniors received diplomas, with Valedictorian Ammon Brimhall and Co-salutorians Devon Kartchner and Anika Mayberry leading the way for the class, which has garnered close to $200,000 in scholarships.

High School Principal Mark Goodman, before presenting the Class of 2009, commented on the group's collective academic achievements, while alluding to its "potential for greatness." It would be no surprise, said Goodman, should any of this year's graduates step in the future to become a driving force in helping solve the world's problems.

"This is a night of celebration and a night of tears for some," said Goodman. "It's been an honor to work with some of the best students in the state," he said, acknowledging graduates for their prowess in the classroom and willingness to "take significant risks."

Following the grads' march, Senior Class President Barbara Kartchner welcomed all to the ceremony, then Tarah Beaudet led the Pledge of Allegiance, before Kartchner offered the opening address.

She spoke of the years at St. David High School, then went on to list attributes for each graduate.

Joseph Jones and Colton Mayberry then took the podium and performed a musical number, an original score written by Jones, that soon had the audience and graduates clapping along, as the pair made an exuberant jaunt throughout the gymnasium that had been fashioned more like an auditorium.

Co-Salutorians Devon Kartchner and Anika Mayberry each delivered their address before Valedictorian Ammon Brim-hall, clad in a long blonde wig, drew laughter from some in attendance. Brimhall described commencement as a "big moment," in the young graduates' lives and thanked teachers, faculty and parents for all their support.

Following presentation of the class, a slide show depicting graduates at different moments in their lives graced the overhead screen. Many of the slides showed baby and current photos of students.

The ceremony ended with caps strewn about and cheers ringing out throuhout the building.
