Plenty to do this summer for youngsters, adults

Between the city and the school, there are plenty of programs scheduled this summer to keep area children busy.

While the pool, which opens Thursday, (May 28 - see schedule on A3), is a popular attraction, Community Center Director Diana Faulkner said more will be offered this year. One new activity is cup stacking.

Now known as sport stacking, there are competitions held to build the pyramids with paper cups and then take them down quickly. The activity is offered June 29 and July 3.

For adults and kids this year, the city will also be offering quilting and scrapbooking classes and a digital photography course.

Besides open swim in June, there will two dive in movies. The first will be Cars on June 6, with gates set to open at 6:30 p.m.

The University of Arizona astronomy group will be in Benson on June 12, and at some point during the summer a fishing trip will be scheduled.

Benson Middle School is now offering the MAD, or Making a Difference program funded through an $80,000 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant for the next five years. The money funds an after-school program ongoing over the last year, and will fund a four-week summer session June 1 and June 25.

Sign-ups are taking place now at the school.
