BMS Academic Team 2nd in league competition
Benson Middle School A team won second place at the Cochise Athletic Conference academic team competition in April. This win marked the end of an excellent season for the team. This year the team won three first-place ribbons in consecutive competitions at Smith (Fort Huachuca), St. David and Willcox. At other matches the team placed second in Pomerene and third in meets at Lowell (Bisbee) and Benson. The A team consisted of eighth-graders Ricky Rose, Brooke Howe, Sarrah Boughan, Shelby Brittain, and Rhiannon Reece. This was the team that won the meets but not without help from B Team teammates Katie Bryan, Kylee Lyon, Jessica Borders, Connor Hancox, Chandler Johnson, Melissa Bachtel, Brandi Hermens, Destiny Hill, Marcella Rubens, and Kelsey Claridge. None of those wins would have been possible without coaches Nona Hansen and Gene Bilodeau. Equal contributors were Mr. Rose, Dawn Reece, and Judy Meyer. "Our biggest competition is Smith" stated Ricky Rose. "They started their current winning streak with a second-place plaque and continued with seven years on the first-place trophy. Our second place could mean a change of ownership in the academic team trophy in years to come."
