The Turquoise Hills Family Golf Center finally found a buyer last week, as Grab Golf LLC paid $500,000 for the 67-acre property located east of State Route 80.
Grab Golf LLC is composed of some local business owners, but details to the entity are vague. Broker Martin Raml said they were happy to sell the property.
Peter Lawson has owned the 18-hole golf course since 2003. Lawson, a Canada native, said the economy was a big reason for selling, stating he and his wife, Leslie ,have stretched themselves too thin with businesses in Canada and Naco.
Cochise County Recorder Christine Rhodes said Grab Golf LLC paid $500,000 for the entire property, with $67,000 as the down payment.
At an auction in April, a bidder had offered Lawson as much as $650,000, but the deal fell through.
Raml said the deal between Lawson and Grab Golf was finalized last week, and they were happy to be keeping the business local.
"The new owners are a local group, and we sincerely wish them the best," said Lawson. "The transition has been smooth due in large part to the efforts of Carla Huffman in the office. There are so many dedicated people that work on behalf of the golfing public that we can't thank them all properly. The paper just isn't big enough to contain our words of praise, but suffice it to say our staff deserves enthusiastic support from the Benson community as they work tirelessly on your behalf. Leslie and I have felt welcome here from day one over seven years ago, and it is our hope that the new owners will enjoy the same warm welcome to business in Benson. We will miss you all."
A statement from the new owners stated they have several ideas to enhance the overall operation, with plans to keep the restaurant open for breakfast and possibly lunch, starting Sept. 15.
In the future, they are looking to have steak and salmon dinners with light entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.
The new name of the facility will be Turquoise Hills Golf & RV, as they have plans to develop RV sites on a "slow and steady pace".
