July 4 parade, vendor applications available

Parade and vendor applications for the city's July 4 celebration are available at the Visitors Center, Senior/Community Center and online at www.cityofbenson.com, click on parade. "We challenge the community to show us what you've got, said Lisa Hamilton, chair of the Benson Mayor's 4th of July Committee. "It's only $5 to enter the parade - no excuses, people!"

Alexandra Orton featured artist at Gallery of Dreams

Benson resident Alexandra Orton is June's Artist of the Month at the Gallery of Dreams in St. David.


Orton works primarily in acrylics, water-soluble oils and pencil and charcoal. Her work shows attention to detail and ability to capture the personality of each subject. She also creates colorful and unique southwestern landscape and animals.

"My only goal is to continue to grow, challenging myself with new mediums, new subjects or new locations," said Orton.

USMC detachment members sought

The Corporal George Salcido Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets at Benson Senior Center on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings generally last about an hour.

The detachment is seeking new members to meet goals currently unattainable due to lack of membership.

New West School

student registration

New West School is accepting completed enrollment packets for all K-eighth-grade students for the 2009-10 school year. Registration packets can be picked up at 98 N. Oak Dr. in Mescal and 3225 W. Navajo Tr. in J-Six or a mailed packet can be requested. Originals or copies of child's birth certificate and shot records required. Space is limited. Call the school office at (520) 586-1976.

VFW fundraising

dinner Friday

VFW Post 6271, 233 E. 5th St., Benson, is holding its weekly fundraising dinner Friday, June 12, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Menu includes beer-battered fish, french fires, coleslaw and cornbread.

For take out or more information call 586-2197. A $6 donation is asked. Sunday bingo at 6 p.m., kitchen opens one hour prior.

Lunch, snacks served at Benson School this month

Benson Schools is offering a free summer snack and lunch this month. The program runs Monday through Thursday until June 25. This program is offered to anyone between the ages of 5 to 18. Attending Benson schools or participation in summer programs is not required.

summer chorus

Benson Summer Chorus, under direction of Joel Schwindt, is looking for singers of all ages and ability. Rehearsals will be held Thursday nights, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., through July 9, with concert set for Friday, July 10 at 7 p.m. Rehearsals and concert will be held at Benson High School. Wellness health clinic dates in St. David

St. David Wellness & Complementary Health Clinic will offer Reiki (to everyone attending). Rabies clinic at

All Creatures June 13

A rabies clinic will be held Saturday, June 13 at All Creatures Veterinarian Clinic, 655 E. 4th St., Benson.

Cost is $20 per domestic animal. All dogs must be on leash and cats in carriers. No exceptions. Dogs three months or older are required to have rabies shots. County and city animal control will be there for anyone needing to purchase dog license.

Program offered for

autistic youngsters

The Heart of Peace Institute offers a summer program for young people with autism spectral disorders and developmental delay.This summer program offers alternative therapies. They include classical homeopathy, holistic nutrition, cranial aacral therapy, neurodevelopment reflex re-patterning skills, sensory integration, art and music therapy, movement therapy, counseling and support for parents. The program is designed for young people and a parent or grandparent.

The program runs Aug. 2-9, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Tucson Waldorf School, 3349 E. Presidio, Tucson.

The Benson Elks have changed the menu to hamburgers for their Tuesday night fundraiser dinners. Burgers, with all the trimmings, chips or salad, available weekly from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 623 Foothill Dr., for a $6 donation. Proceeds donated to charity. Meeting for St. David Farmers Market June 13

Everyone interested in more information about or assisting in the creation of the St. David Farmers Market is invited to the third community meeting on Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. too 11 a.m. at SPI Farm, 105 W. Patton St. in St. David. The farmers market is looking for local farmers, ranchers, backyard growers, beekeepers, bakers and licensed food preparers to sell their farm and food products, crafts made from locally raised agricultural materials and plants at a weekly Saturday morning market in St. David.
